Acid pickling is the main measure of carbon regeneration and is effective to remove the adsorbed inorganic matter. Each batch of desorption carbon should be pickled in production. Before desorption, a large number of base metal ions can be removed in advance, which is beneficial to desorption and electrodeposition. However, if not properly controlled, the equipment and fittings in the desorption-electrowinning loop will be corroded. Use of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid treatment effect is not obvious, but hydrochloric acid will cause stainless steel container and pipe corrosion. Pickling time and concentration of acid and alkali solution should be determined according to production conditions.
Heating regeneration is an important means to restore carbon’s activity. The quality of regeneration mainly depends on whether the regeneration conditions are appropriate. Excessive regeneration temperature and too long regeneration time will lead to a large loss of activated carbon. When steam is used as regenerative gas, the activity of carbon can be fully restored at lower temperature and in a short time. The activity of water cooled carbon decreased slightly, but the strength of regenerated carbon was increased.
Although acid pickling can remove the adsorbed ash from carbon, it can not improve the active parameters of carbon. Therefore, in order to fully restore the activity of carbon, heating regeneration must be carried out. In addition, a large amount of gray ash was found in the regenerated carbon, which was the result of the burning of wood chips in the carbon. This is beneficial for removing wood chips from the process and reducing metal loss.
